Common Mistakes Small Business Owners Make

Updated: Sep 9, 2021

Running a business is all about trialling and learning, with the cheapest way to learn being to learn from others. Read on to learn from my learnings!

If you're a new or an aspiring small business owner, this article is for you! Now that I'm in my third business (the first broke even, the second hit 6-figure in year 2, the third is fast scaling towards listing), I've learned a lot along the way and would love to share some of the common mistakes small businesses make.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

🎯 Not using technology enough: For those of us who love being hands-on with our products and services, it's great to operate that way at the very beginning. But to free up time and energy as we scale, we need to start automating as much as we can.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

🎯Not outsourcing enough: Similarly, trying to do everything ourselves will limit the bandwidth we have to work on the business, rather than in the business. Outsourcing will help us to focus on growing the business and keeping it strong.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

🎯Not being organised enough: We don't need to be a big corporate to be ultra organised. Being small and organised means we have room to be flexible when the opportunity arises and to be agile when troubles hit. Make time to design proper systems and processes.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

🎯Not resting enough: Hard work is over-rated. Being small business owners, we need to think on our feet very often as we often have finite resources to fall back on. Make sure that we are well-rested each day. This way we can give our business our best input.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

🎯Not socialising enough: No man is an island. Keeping to ourselves slogging away is terrible for sanity, not to mention we'll be missing out on opportunities to be inspired with new perspectives or to be connected to people who can help our business.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

🎯Not being flexible enough: Our small business needs us to be flexible like a willow tree in a storm, bending and swaying but not snapping. We need to make contingency plans for unexpected bad days and also leave room on our plate to be available to grab new opportunities.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Here's a productive new week ahead. Let's kick some goals!🤓👍
